we are lucky
to be born in a Malaysia
that is free
our ancestors fought daily
for another day
to live
hardship
blood and tears
finally freedom became ours
but are we really
the lucky generation
we have everything
except our memories
of our history
MERDEKA!

We celebrate our National Day celebration on 31st August 2013. My daughter Irani (12) wrote this poem she would have to recite for our Merdeka celebrations in her school.
That's our Malaysian flag - the Jalur Gemilang, in our garden, a picture from a couple of years ago. The story is here. Time to take out the flag!
that last line is a bit sad...we have everything but forgot how we got it...and that becomes rather scary
ReplyDeleteSuch a powerful poem from a very aware twelve year old. Wow! A truly wonderful poem, Irani. I do hope your school will think about adding your history to the curriculum. Maybe your mom can talk to the School Board:)
ReplyDeletePowerful words that bespeak of a strong people. Even though memories may not be yours to remember, are they not still yours? I think so. Well written.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poem, Irani! Twelve years did you say! My goodness! We're going to have another 'Logan' knocking at the doorstep of blogosphere. Logan, Brian's son is following closely his father's footsteps. Irani you're not only talking history but making history following closely your Mom! Great take!

Thank you, Aunties and Uncles… Irani here, and I'm fourteen now. I will be reading a poem at school on 15 April entitled Hurricane Isabella.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to it ^_^
