Unending summer
Long ago admirals marched
Endless siege
The only way
To conquer the city gates
The bridge must fall
Warriors divide
20,000 fell, more came
From the river
The drawbridge
Held the key to glory
To downfall
Malacca
Waterways so conquered
was no more

For Haiku Heights
The Malacca Sultanate was conquered by the Portuguese Armada in 1511 after endless siege. The river, and control of the drawbridge that controlled the waterways of the Malacca River was key to the conquest.
ReplyDeleteI do not know much about haiku.. but I think, as always, your post is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ayoh Wang...I have Melaka on my mind.
DeleteGreat set!
ReplyDeleteCreepy thorns to glistening petals
Thank you. Actually I love people who can write so much in 3 lines for a power impact haiku. But that is difficult for me!
DeleteWonderful set.. I loved the second one the most..

Deletethose darn Portuguese (my husband is one!) a wonderfully worded bit of history I googled Malacca and learned something new and interesting today....
ReplyDeleteIt was so long ago. I now have many close friends of Portuguese descent!
DeleteThis is great. Haiku, story, and history lesson combined.
ReplyDeleteNicely written Nino. A strong image of a battle ... very suprisingly used in a haiku.
ReplyDeleteKristjaan dear,
DeleteYou are right. Perhaps battle scenes are not suitable for haiku...
Ninot Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteThe Malacca River obviously had seen better days very unlike what it is now! A wonderful peek back into history. Great haiku set!
Hank
Thank you Sir Hank! I think the ship moored on Sg Melaka is the wrong ship!
DeleteA tragic story in history told by a great story teller.....It is always important to remember all of history so that we can learn from it and not make the same mistakes....thank you for sharing this Ninot. Hope all is well with you these days. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt was such a tragic day in the history of Melaka. The bridge was so important in the battle because it linked the two parts of the city divided by Melaka river. Loosing the bridge split Melaka's army into two. The warriors of Melaka fought hard in the pitched battle.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way of reminding us about this important day.
